It’s Summertime!

They’re finally ready. Quebec Strawberries are in like Flynn, and we’re massacring them by the bucketful to produce mouthwatering Strawberry-Rhubarb goodies for your gastronomic delight. That’s right dear customers – we like you so much we’re willing to hurt innocent strawberries for you. Cook them. Stew them. Cover them in sugar. Wrap them in dough and bake hell out of them. And it’s all for you.

We get asked for Strawberry-Rhubarb pie all year round, on average of twice a week, and while our standard, Raspberry Rhubarb crumble is amazing – there is just something magical about Strawberry-Rhubarb pie. Maybe because it was the most traditional summertime pies of our childhoods, or maybe the tang of rhubarb just can’t be balanced better by lesser berries; whatever it is – there’s something about Strawberry-Rhubarb. But we are the most discriminating of pie-makers at Bonatarte, and not just any strawberry is good enough to be dished out to our clients.

We wait all year long for the brief but intense Quebec Strawberry Season, so that our pies need never be tainted by such horror as a frozen strawberry. Other barriers can freeze with integrity – but something gets lost from the Strawberry along the way. So we wait. And we make you wait, dear clients. Because good things, really, really good things, are worth waiting three quarters of the year for. Have you tried our Strawberry-Rhubarb pie yet? You should. It won’t be around forever.

Strangers in the night

Armed with sixty pies, eight pie servers, several zillion pastry swirls and really cool ‘Staff’ nametags, Debbie, Natalia and I hit up Strangers in the Night; a benefit for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. We had so much fun. Not only was it for a good cause (you can never lose when helping the sick kids,) but the music was great (thank you Divine Brown and Blue Rodeo) and everyone we met loved our pies. How can you not have fun when everyone you talk to is raving about how awesome you are?

Now, we know that our pies kick intergalactic butt, but what was also pretty cool was how many people loved our little pastry swirls (or pets des soeurs, for those who weren’t educated by nuns). Nothing like baked goods to bring back the memories of childhood, and our baked goods have all the nostalgic taste you could ever need. Happily, despite an almost constant rush there were a few pies left over at the end of the night that we were able to donate to the silent auction, and we’d love to know who the lucky winner was!

At the end of the day, we loved getting to meet the other vendors , event organizers and the guests, who despite loading themselves up on all the other excellent food available, managed to save a few square inches of tummy room for our Caramel Apple, Blackberry Blueberry Vanilla Bean and Raspberry Rhubarb crumble pies.

Can’t wait to do this again next year!

Sweet Dreams are made with Meringue

“Would you like to try one of these?” Natalia asked me, holding out a smallish, white and brown flecked nibblet. She asked me this casually, as if she had not just handed me the most awesomely, nay, awe-inspiringly delicious meringue cookie ever devised, conceived or otherwise baked by woman. As a baker, I am no stranger to sweet deliciousness, but these little guys are something else entirely. The Hershey-Kiss shaped dollops of melt in your mouth tastiness are filled with wee little bits of chocolate and pecans. If Helen of Troy was a cookie – this is the one she would be. And they sold like hotcakes. Tiny, sweet hotcakes of pure rich-but-light goodness. I sold some to a woman, and ten minutes later she was back claiming I’d sold her an empty box. She took two more and threatened to bill me for the new pants she was going to have to buy. This, my friends, is success. I’m not sure how she does it, but I am a thankful woman that Natalia can manipulate such an ersatz substance as meringue. You will be too, when you try them. Which you should. As soon as possible. Like today. Or maybe tomorrow, because I think we sold out again.

BONATARTE APPLE PIE, 5 INCHES, $4.95, AND 10 INCHES, $14.95

I was sent this apple pie by none other than Montreal radio personality Aaron Rand, who is connected with the Bonatarte Gourmet Pie company. After my review of supermarket apple pies, Rand was willing to put his pie up to the test, and I'm happy to say it came out as my favourite in the commercial category. Made using only natural ingredients (no preservatives, no stabilizers, no fillers), this pie impressed most for its chunky cinnamon apple filling and flaky pastry. Thumbs up!

BONATARTE supports National Diabetes Awareness Month with their new Diabetes-friendly gourmet pies

Montreal, QC — In support of November’s National Diabetes Awareness Month, Bonatarte, Montreal’s premier gourmet pie destination, introduces diabetic-friendly pies to their menu.

Bonatarte, located on St. Jacques Street in NDG, is now featuring Luscious Lemon Cheesecake and Bleu Bleu Blueberry Crumb both created to satisfy the restrictions of a diabetic diet. Bonatarte’s pie sisters, Tanya and Natalia Adams, who are part owners as well as Bonatarte's bakers, will be adding more diabetic-friendly selections to their menu that meet the nutritional criteria of less than 6 grams of fat and less than 30 grams of carbohydrates per serving.

Bonatarte encourages their clients to adopt healthier eating habits that also taste great. Owner Natalia Adams notes, 'Our customers have already confirmed they can taste the quality difference because we only use fresh fruit with no package fillers. There are no ingredients in our pies you can’t pronounce.'

Reinventing the traditional pie, Bonatarte can now unite pie lovers and diet-restricted customers in their quest for fresh-baked quality desserts.
